Model-by-model comparison · Verified manufacturer specifications · Updated October 15, 2026
The Redcat Ascent-18 International Scout II Brushless and Ascent-18 APEX are both 1:18 four-wheel-drive mini rock crawlers. They share the same broad purpose but differ materially in battery voltage, geometry, chassis construction, motor system and parts layout. These differences matter more than unverified top-speed claims.
2S aluminum-chassis crawler

Ascent-18 Scout II Brushless
Longer body, narrower stance, 2S-only ESC and included 750 mAh LiPo. A practical choice when the Scout II body styling and its documented 2S system suit your plans.
3S carbon-chassis crawler

Ascent-18 APEX Brushless
Lower-profile carbon chassis, wider stance and a documented 2–3S ESC. Manufacturer packaging includes a smaller-capacity 3S battery; runtime cannot be inferred directly from voltage.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Scout II when you want its longer scale body and 2S equipment
The Scout II is listed at 265 mm long, 126 mm wide and 125 mm high. Its 2S-only ESC is a strict limit: installing a 3S LiPo simply because another Ascent-18 variant supports 3S would be unsafe for the Scout II electronics. The factory 750 mAh pack and USB charger are included; allow for four AA transmitter batteries.
Choose APEX when you want the wider, lower-carbon chassis
At 222 mm long, 143 mm wide and 98 mm high, the APEX is shorter, wider and lower. Its redesigned carbon-fiber platform, brass-weighted front components and Hobbywing motor/ESC suit technical crawling. Redcat describes a substantial platform redesign, so the presence of shared family branding does not mean every Scout II upgrade will fit APEX.
Battery and upgrade compatibility
Important: The Scout II’s R3C-BL controller is specified for 2S LiPo only. The APEX controller supports 2–3S LiPo under manufacturer specifications. Do not transfer batteries, chargers, gears or steering parts between models without confirming the exact connectors, part numbers and instructions. APEX’s smaller mAh battery rating alone is not a valid runtime comparison.
For parts and upgrades, match the specific vehicle variant, not just “Ascent-18” in a marketplace title. Check mount dimensions, electronic limits, connector type and manufacturer part numbers. Generic claims of universal Ascent-18 compatibility are not sufficient.
